Johnny was a young teenager, trapped inside the body of an older adult needing to experience more of everything at all times. He wasn’t just satisfied with someone giving him an explanation to one of his many questions; he needed to experience it for himself. For instance, when Johnny a his child, he asked his mom what would happen if he took the hairdryer and put it in water while plugged in, but he wouldn’t take his mother’s word for it and he proceeded to try it for himself. Although the outcome was not always great, Johnny has always displayed this sense of adventure and curiosity for everything in his life.
Johnny was a smart kid but rarely listened to any authority figure in his life due to his outrageous urge to try things firsthand. One day after school, Johnny was listening to the radio and heard a promotion for a race around the country. Johnny, only being 15 years of age, had not done much traveling outside of his Virginia countryside residence. He thought about this advertisement and viewed it as an opportunity not only to win a first place cash prize of one million dollars but a chance to set free and see all 50 states with his own eyes.
Like any well behaved young man would do, he first asked his mother for permission to embark on this wild journey. He approached his mom in a conniving fashion and simply put it, “Mother, o mother of mine, I am starting to get older and soon will be out of this house, and I think it is about time that I start to see some of this wonderful, exciting, culturally rich country for myself.”
His mom was a bit puzzled but asked, “Johnny well how can I make sure that you get to do what is that you want.”?
Johnny clearly saw that his mother misunderstood him and he went along with his mom’s misreading. “Mom the school is turning into a traveling school in order to spread its progressive philosophy to the rest of the country in hopes that other institutions will adopt the same principles.” It took his mother a few minutes to digest this, and insisted that she call the school to get the low down. However, Johnny had thought ahead and had one of his friends answer the school phone and explain this elaborate fib to his mother. His mother was not pleased that her boy was going to be leaving home but felt as if she had no choice considering this was the school he went to.
Johnny was able to trick his mom into letting him go and he experienced all 50 states in less than five months and won the first place prize money.
